Wicca     Creating a Sacred Space: What Are We Really Doing?   By Samuel Abrams

This post is meant first for Wiccans but applies to all who create sacred space.

In my opinion, all space is equally sacred. So, when we say we are creating a sacred space by casting a circle, what are we doing and what does it mean? We are doing two things. The 1st, and less important, is that we are purifying the space of all negative vibrations that others may have imposed on it. The 2nd, and much more important, is that we are changing our awareness of the space. We are getting rid of our own negativity and our own lack of awareness of the sacredness of that particular space. In doing this, we are not changing the space, we are changing ourselves. Some spaces may appear and/or feel grand or more sacred than others, but this is a result of our perceptions of the space. Not the space itself. In some spaces it may be easier for a person to tap into various energies than it is in others, and we may say that this makes the space more sacred. This is often due to our own perceptions of this space and our mental associations with it. It may also be due to the spaces repeated use over time for sacred activities. This can leave a psychic imprint or residue. However, the easier access to energy is not what makes the space sacred, it just makes it easier to change our perceptions. This is true even of man-made spaces and spaces are perceived as negative, such as a cemetery or a prison cell.

It should be noted that if the casting is strong enough, it can cause some people to avoid the area often without them being aware of why they are doing so.
