Once there was a man who wandered from place to place looking for happiness and fulfillment. One day, exhausted from his search, he sat down under a tree. As luck would have it, he had unwittingly chosen as his refuge the wish fulfilling tree. For whatever wish arises in the mind, of the person who sits beneath it, is immediately granted. The man began to enjoy the cool shade of the tree and soon felt restored from his tiresome travels. He thought, this is a lovely spot. If only I had a small house here. No sooner had the thought taken form in his mind than an attractive little cottage appeared right before him. The man thought, how wonderful. Now, if I only had a wife with whom to share my joy. Instantly, a lovely woman appeared before him and smiled. Wow, the man said, and then he thought, if I just had some delicious food to eat, my joy would be complete. Without a moment’s delay, a large serving cart manifested, laden with good foods. The man began to eat, and midway through his meal, he began to wish he had someone to serve him. A Butler appeared. The man ate his fill and then leaned back against the tree contentedly. Only then did he begin to wonder what was going on here. Everything I thought of appeared in front of me. First the house, then the woman, then the food. Even the Butler. There must be a goblin living in this tree. From out of nowhere emerged A goblin and stood in front of him. He’s going to eat me, the man cried out. And that is what the goblin did.
I saw a story somewhat similar to this in an anthology of fantasy stories by woman authors. In this story, an evil magician was seeking a spell that would change thought into reality for 24 hours. After much searching and torturing many others, a woman came forward and gave him the spell. He tested it by thinking he wanted an enormous emerald, and it instantly appeared. He asked the woman why she was willing to give him this spell. She replied, White Elephants. Two White Elephants appeared next to the evil magician. Wait! He cried, I did not ask for these. The woman said you thought about it when I said the words. Now if someone spoke of your death…
Its a good thing that in this realm magic is not so easy.
