Divination By Samuel Abrams

Have you ever wondered how the Tarot, or for that matter, any form of divination or prophecy actually works? I don’t mean the mechanics of it. Shuffling the cards and interpreting them. That only applies to cartomancy which includes Tarot. What about other forms of divination? There are so many. The better-known ones Include Astrology, Numerology, Palmistry. Runes, Pendulum, I Ching, and Scrying via a mirror, fire or water. Other forms include the use of clouds, wax, seashells, dice, bones, entrails, and the flight of birds. The list is nearly endless. All these methods work.

What then, is behind it?

Most, if not all forms of divination include looking at the past to see where a problem or issue came from. Looking at the present to see what is happening now and looking into the future to see what could or will happen. Many, but not all, also look to see how a given outcome might be changed by changes in attitude, behavior, preparation or actions,

The different methods give varying degrees of form and structure to something that appears to me to be non-linear, multi-dimensional, and confusing in both time and the questions to be answered.  Each of these methods is just a tool. They all have their advantages and disadvantages. These limits come not just from the physical limits of the tool but from the expectations and limits set by the culture and beliefs of the person using it and their openness to guidance from higher sources. Much depends on what you are trying to accomplish, and on what each person is comfortable with. You should know the advantages and disadvantages of several types of divination.

Astrology is a good example of a relatively fixed system that allows less room for intuition. Many people think that the stars and the planets influence or even control what’s happening to us via flows of energy. I tend to disagree with that. I think what’s happening with astrology is that it’s more a map of what could happen.

The answers one gets can be precise and specific, but this is not common. Usually, readings are general, and/or obscure. There are many reasons for this. In many cases, the method itself may not lend itself to precision. A high degree of precision or specificity may enhance the chance of a self-fulfilling prediction, or it may do the opposite and prevent it from happening. Is time fixed or flexible? Quantum physics, with the idea of superposition, shows it can be both and neither. There is also the implication that our own thoughts can shape reality. Science also shows that our understanding of time is very incomplete and inaccurate.

In some cases, many people are trying for the same thing such as a lucky number or lottery ticket. The multiple energy influences make accurate prediction almost impossible.

My own opinion is that all forms of divination work by tapping into either the questioner’s thoughts, from deity and/or Karma and/or the Akashic records. The Akashic records are said to be a record of everything that has or will happen.  For the best results, care must be taken not to draw from the questioner’s hopes and fears, or from your own thoughts and ideas. You must put your self aside and allow guidance to come from the highest possible source. In addition. Do not use your own energy to do the work as this will quickly lead to exhaustion and biased answers. Always try to be a clear channel for higher energies to work through you.

Any good divination will include not just what is going to happen but also why and how to change it, if desired. Good divinations usually include both teaching and counseling that is guided not just by the divination but by the readers’ experience, training and intuition.

In some cases, readings may not sound as if it were made for the individual but as generic advice.  This can happen because of the problems presented, and its causes are very common. This happens far more often than most people realize.

Personally, I can’t imagine anything more boring than knowing everything that will happen. When my own dreams of the future come to pass, I can’t wait to move on and see what comes next.

In this article I draw no distinction between Divination, which mostly applies to a single person, and Prophecy which usually applies to a group and is often unlooked for.
